PREVIEW: Dick Grayson teams with Jon Kent in NIGHTWING #89

By Zack Quaintance — I’ve always appreciated the relationship between Dick Grayson and Superman, the usual Clark Kent version. It’s sort of an older brother dynamic, with this touching shared understanding of what it’s like to be friends with Batman. Not only that, but to a brighter part of the Dark Knight’s life. It’s fun. But now, Clark Kent is off in space (having just the most epic time in the excellent Action Comics series), and his son, Jon Kent, is filling the role of Superman on earth. And you know, we haven’t really seen Dick Grayson spend much time with him.

This is set to change with Nightwing #89, a preview of which just hit my inbox from DC Comics. The book is due out Feb. 15 from the creative team of writer Tom Taylor, artist Bruno Redondo, colorist Adriano Lucas, and letterer Wes Abbott. It’s actually the first part of a two-part crossover story, which will wrap in March with Superman: Son of Kal-El #9. You can find the full press release from DC, along with four unlettered interior pages and a set of covers, below.

Enjoy!

PREVIEW: Nightwing #89

Years ago, when Robin took his first uncertain steps away from Batman as his own hero, Superman stepped in and offered Dick Grayson crucial advice, support, and a name: Nightwing. Now it's time for Nightwing to return the favor! Nightwing #89 (2/15) and Superman: Son of Kal-El #9 (3/8) will cross over in a two-part story by Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas and Wes Abbot!

But before Nightwing and Superman team-up in current continuity, fans will get sneak peek into their past! Below, take a look into a flashback scene with Dick Grayson and Jon Kent… plus Batman and Superman! This is a World’s Finest Dads (and a World’s Finest Sons) moment!

(Spoiler alert: Batman has a solution to everything in his utility belt!)

Nightwing #89, written by Tom Taylor (Dark Knights of Steel) with art and cover by Bruno Redondo (Injustice, Suicide Squad), color by Adriano Lucas, lettering by Wes Abbott, featuring a card stock variant cover by Jamal Campbell (below left) and a 1:25 incentive variant by Bengal (below right), arrives in comic book stores and participating digital retailers on Tuesday, February 15.

The Superman/Nightwing crossover will be concluded in Superman: Son of Kal-El #9 on sale March 8. Nightwing promised Clark Kent that while he's off-planet, he would look after Clark's son, Jon, as he tries to fill his father's shoes as Superman. But with someone out there murdering superpowered people, is Nightwing in over his head? The cover below left is by Bruno Redondo, and the cover below right is by Travis Moore with colors by Tamra Bonvillan.
