Your new creative team for the BATMAN main book is ZDARSKY and JIMENEZ

By Zack Quaintance — Writer Chip Zdarsky, artist Jorge Jimenez, and colorist Tomeu Morey will be the new creative team on Batman — DC Comics’ flagship title and arguably superhero comics most important book — moving forward, starting with Batman #125, which hits on July 5.

Comicbook.com had the exclusive on this news yesterday, before it quickly spread through Twitter, primarily through Zdarsky. Although it wasn’t included in the announcement, letterer Clayton Cowles seems likely to round out this team, having lettered this book (I believe) dating back to the start of the Rebirth Batman run. They take over the title from writer Joshua Williamson and first Jorge Molin and more recently Howard Porter, a group that took over the title with Batman #118, after James Tynion IV departed to focus on his creator-owned work.

Jimenez and Morey (and probably Cowles, too) are all actually holdovers from that Tynion run. The new addition here is Zdarsky, who is also currently writing a DC Comics Black Label imprint series titled Batman: The Knight, a sort of alternate take on Batman’s origin that approaches it from what feels like a fresh psychological angle (read our full review of Batman: The Knight #1). Zdarsky also contributed an excellent Red Hood story to the anthology series, Batman: Urban Legends, and he’s had other Gotham work in Batman: Black and White as well as Detective Comics #1027.

Zdarsky is perhaps a bit of a surprise to take over Batman, as the book traditionally goes to writers who are signed DC exclusive. Zdarsky, meanwhile, is still writing a prolonged Daredevil run for Marvel Comics, set to relaunch with a brand-new #1 issue that has been announced but not yet scheduled (although it seems likely for June).

As part of the announcement, DC also unveiled that the first arc of this run would be titled Failsafe, and it would span six issues. Story elements here include Bruce Wayne having a nightmare of a future he can’t save, as well as an enemy returning from Batman’s past, determined to end him. Perhaps the bit that attracted the most attention following the announcement, was Zdarsky telling ComicBook that he wanted to focus on Batman and Robin, and he has an affinity for Tim Drake, probably the least-used Robin of the current moment. Tim Drake also appears on the Batman #125 cover (see above), leading me to boldy predict, friends, that this run might feature some new Tim Drake content.

Exciting stuff. Again, Batman #125 is set to hit on July 5.
