Top Comics to Buy for November 11, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — This week’s Top Comics to Buy for November 11, 2020 has a great cross-section of the things I love about reading monthly comics: a contained one-shot with a classic character (Hellboy!), a finale for a well-done series predicated on superhero continuity esoterica (Hawkman!), and the promising start of a new long-term run (Iron Man!). Add to that a slice-of-life comic as strong and funny as Getting It Together, and you’ve got a great set of books.

Check out our full set of picks below!

Top Comics to Buy for November 11, 2020

PICK OF THE WEEK
Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: The Seven Wives Club
Writer:
Mike Mignola
Artist: Adam Hughes
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Letterer: Clem Robbins
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $4.99
Mignola! Hughes! The team behind the Eisner Award–winning one-shot Hellboy: Krampusnacht spins a new ghostly yarn! Hellboy comes to the aid of a young girl whose ghost hunt goes wrong, and a visit to an abandoned medical school reveals sinister layers to a grisly, long-ago murder. Stolen cadavers, vengeful spirits, and more abound in this one-shot. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola reunites with fan-favorite artist Adam Hughes for a spirit-fueled scream fest sure to excite old and new fans alike!
Why It’s Cool: The last time that Mike Mignola and Adam Hughes collaborated on a Hellboy story — back in 2017, with Hellboy: Krampusnacht — they created an Eisner-winning one-shot that is certain to endear as a classic scary holidy/winter comic. Their new collaboration with the character is out this week, and it’s just as well-executed, ranking as one of the better all-time Hellboy meat-and-potatoes ghosthunting stories…with a twist.

Getting It Together #2
Writers:
Sina Grace and Omar Spahi
Artist:
Jenny D. Fine
Colorist:
Mx. Struble
Letterer:
Sean Konot
Publisher:
Image Comics
Price: $3.99
Is it really possible to be friends with your ex? Sam and Lauren try to work things out while Jack dives deeper into dating apps, which brings more surprises from his past than he expected. Meanwhile, Lauren’s band Nipslip gets an offer they simply can’t refuse. You won't wanna miss this oversized, joyously melodramatic issue, including a bonus, Jack-centric side quest!
Why It’s Cool: I’m a big fan of slice of life comics (although I hate that term!), especially ones that are done as well as this one. This is such a genuine and honest look at a circle of friends in a big city (in this case San Francisco) in 2020. We’ve gotten these sorts of stories for so many generations, but with the tumult of the news cycle over the past six years or so, creators have seemed just a bit less willing to capture life as it really is, preferring instead to indulge in the horrific and fantastic (especially in comics). This book does such a wonderful job of creating real characters with relatable yet dramatic problems, capturing the chaos of figuring out our lives. It’s also relentlessly smart and funny. Simply put, this is a must-read, and I’m loving every page of it.

Hawkman #29
Writer:
Robert Venditti
Peniciler: Fernando Pasarin
Inker: Oclair Albert
Colorist: Jeromy Cox
Letterer: Rob Leigh
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $3.99
He’s lived and died and lived again. But now, with just one life left to live and the reincarnation cycle at its end, will Hawkman sacrifice everything to protect the woman he loves from the cursed blade of Hath-Set? Learn the fate of Hawkman and Hawkwoman in a tale that will take you to the edge of time and space!
Why It’s Cool: The current Hawkman title comes to a run this week, and it really seems like the end of a certain type of book at DC Comics. There are a lot of exciting things happening at DC in the months to come, following a leadership change in editorial, but a book about a character with little to no TV/film adaptation potential that depends heavily on comics continuity estorerica? It just doesn’t seem like we’ll be getting that any time soon. This Hawkman run, however, has been a perfect example of all of that, done about as well as is possible, and this week’s finale is a great/fitting end for it.

Iron Man #3
Writer:
Christopher Cantwell
Artist: Cafu
Colorist: Frank D’Armata
Letterer: Joe Caramagna
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99
Tony Stark is getting tired of apologizing for being himself, especially when as Iron Man he’s more powerful than most any other human being on Earth. As he wears himself out trying to do everything he can to be a force of good in the world, he’s beginning to chafe at the idea that he really owes anybody anything. Is it too much to ask for a thank you? He’s trying to keep his head down and his ego in check, but when KORVAC reveals himself as the puppet master behind Stark’s latest investment, Tony will at least have somewhere to channel his anger and frustration… That is, if he survives the conflict at all.
Why It’s Cool: This new Iron Man run has been everything I want in a superhero run, feeling complex narratively while paying homage to and drawing inspiration from the character’s long history and mythos. What I have especially liked about this run through the first two issues is that writer Christopher Cantwell and artist Cafu have essentially taken the character back to his comics roots after many years of Iron Man comics that sought to translate Robert Downey Jrs’ Tony Stark interpretation backwards onto the comic page. There’s just a classic feel to this book, while at the same time it feels of the moment by plumbing the depths of Tony’s psyche the way only a writer like Cantwell can. This book is among my favorite things happening in superhero comics right now.

Iron Man #3

Penultiman #2
Writer:
Tom Peyer
Artist:
Alan Robinson
Colorist:
Lee Loughridge
Letterer:
Rob Steen
Publisher:
Ahoy Comics
Price:
$3.99
His confidence shattered, 2020's most magnificent superhero seeks reassurance from a strange source: his incarcerated arch-adversary, terror-scientist Zev Zollo! PLUS: text features and short prose fiction, illustrated to the ultimate!
Why It’s Cool: Nobody satirizes superhero comics better than Tom Peyer and AHOY Comics, and this new book is no exception. This is a really nuanced and smart superhero satire as well, albeit it one with a simple concept on its surface — our central hero is the genetically-enhanced incarnation of the perfect man…just before the perfect man. He’s the next to last step in human evolution, and as a result, he’s got some serious issues…this book is an exploration of how that can eat away at a guy while he goes through the superhero motions. It’s fantastic.
