Top Comics to Buy for October 6, 2021

PICK OF THE WEEK
Arkham City: The Order of the World #1
Writer:
Dan Watters
Artist:
DaNi
Colorist:
Dave Stewart
Letterer:
Aditya Bidikar
Publisher:
DC Comics
The Joker’s attack on Arkham Asylum left the long-standing Gotham establishment in ruin, most of the patients killed or missing, and only a handful of surviving staff-a few nurses, a gravely injured security guard, and one doctor. In the chaos of the assault, it is believed that several of the asylum’s patients escaped and scurried off into the dark nooks and crannies of Gotham City. Now, these Arkhamites walk among us, and it’s up to the Asylum’s one remaining doctor, Jocasta Joy, to round up her former patients. Meet these Arkhamites: a woman with no face, a pyggy in search of perfection, a man who feels nothing and burns everything, a woman who must devour life to save herself, a man unfit for the waking world who looks instead for Wonderland, a body with more than one soul, a being unbound from time who lives in the present and the past, a boy who seeks the comfort of vermin, and the twisted man who sees them all for who they are. And witness the avenging angel who stalks them. This fall, join writer Dan Watters and artist Dani on an odyssey through the deepest depths and darkest shadows of Gotham City and find all-new reasons to fear the night.
Why It’s Cool:
This comic absolutely blew me away. Arkham City - The Order of the World #1 is engaging on every level, from the deceptive simplicity of its plot to the risky abstractness of its artwork to the consistency of its tone-setting colors to Aditya Bidikar’s always-excellent lettering. This is one of the best Batman comics of the year, which is really saying a lot, because this has been quite the year for the Caped Crusader in new comic books.
Price:
$3.99

Amazing Spider-Man #75
Writer:
Zeb Wells
Artist:
Patrick Gleason
Colorist:
Marcio Menyz
Letterer:
Joe Caramagna
Publisher:
Marvel Comics
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is back to thrice-monthly because this story is pure jet fuel. Ben Reilly has returned to NYC and has fully taken back the mantle of Spider-Man, but what does this mean for Peter Parker? The greatest team of web-writers has come together with the most epic arachnid-artists ever assembled to bring you a Spider-story that will shake up Spider-Man's 59th year in ways you CANNOT PREDICT!
Why It’s Cool:
Writer Zeb Wells and artist Patrick Gleason are the new lead creative team for the flagship Amazing Spider-Man title, which is a giant win considering the excellent track record of each. This issue marks the start of a new run on a book that has languished for a good while now, and while I personally think ASM needs a slower release schedule to really get back on track, I’m very excited to see a team of this caliber try to wrangle the book, supported as they will be by other great creators, including writers Kelly Thompson and Saladin Ahmed.

$5.99

Eternals: Celestia #1
Writer:
Kieron Gillen
Artist:
Kei Zama
Letterer:
Clayton Cowles
Publisher:
Marvel Comics
THERE IS NO GOD FOR THE ETERNALS! Now that the truth of their existence is revealed, Ajak and Makkari must pick up the pieces and try to find a road forward... no matter how terrifying it will be, or how their choices will irrevocably shock the rest of the Eternals? Also: How do the Avengers of 1,000,000 BCE figure into it?
Why It’s Cool:
Sure, we could sit here and try to find some fault with the complex Eternals comic (redundant) that Marvel is putting out right now, but the scene-by-scene writing of Kieron Gillen is just too good, and it’s made even better by the A List artists he’s teaming with, including Kei Zama for this book. Great stuff.

$3.99

The Nice House on the Lake #5
Writer:
James Tynion IV
Artist:
Alvaro Martinez Bueno
Colorist:
Jordie Bellaire
Letterer:
Andworld Design
Publisher:
DC Comics - Black Label
Veronica, the Scientist, has one of the longest-standing connections to Walter among anyone in the House…and through her work with NASA, she may have insight into who he really is. But what she sees in the stars above the House may upend everything she thought she knew!
Why It’s Cool:
Since it launched with a basically perfect first issue earlier this year, The Nice House on the Lake has continued to establish itself as one of the best original stories being told in monthly comics right now, doing so with issue after issue that doles out just a little bit more of what’s happening to the characters who are trapped (by an apocalypse) within the aforementioned Nice House. This issue is no exception, featuring as it does quite possibly the best cliffhanger in the book to date. You will not be ready for this ending, which absolutely rules.

$3.99

Put on your tiaras and prepare your indestructible bracelets! DC is inviting you to join us for a one-of-a-kind special showcasing Wonder Woman’s past, present, and future to celebrate the legacy she has created and those she will continue to inspire with her adventures for years to come. This oversize super spectacular features work from some of the very best in the comic industry along with bright young stars ready to share the spotlight with Diana. You won’t want to miss these new stories that capture timeless messages of hope and empowerment presented together in this gorgeous keepsake issue!
Why It’s Cool:
These 80th Anniversary creator jam anthologies that DC has been putting out in recent years have all been pretty great, but my favorites are those that use the occasion to also celebrate a character’s future by having a main story that ties into what’s coming next. This book certainly does that, as the headliner here is the one from the book’s regular creative team, which kicks the fun anthology off. Don’t miss it!

$9.99
