By Zack Quaintance — Here we are already at the Top Comics to Buy for January 19, 2022, our third weekly highlights list of the young year, which is somehow moving both very fast and impossibly slow. That’s just the world these days, I suppose. But hey, at least there are new comics! And this week there’s also a variety of publishers, which is really nice, from DC to Vault to Image. Check out all our picks below…

…and enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for January 19, 2022

PICK OF THE WEEK
Batman - The Knight #1
Writer:
Chip Zdarsky
Artist: Carmine Di Giandomenico
Colorist: Ivan Plascencia
Letterer: Pat Brosseau
Publisher: DC Comics - Black Label
The origin of Batman and his never-ending fight against crime in Gotham City is modern mythology, but what of the story in between? How did an angry, damaged young man grow into the most accomplished detective and crime-fighter the world has ever known? How did the Dark Knight…begin? Superstar writer Chip Zdarsky (Daredevil) and acclaimed artist Carmine Di Giandomenico (The Flash) will take Bruce Wayne on a fraught journey, making allies and enemies, on his training to become Batman in this definitive new series!
Why It’s Cool: As far as I can remember, I don’t think anyone has ever told Batman’s origin story before…kidding! It’s obviously been over-told, but this book is bringing something entirely new to it, a deeply psychological take that lingers in the day to day unpleasantness of Bruce’s drive to become an effective vigilante. It’s great stuff, and we have a full review coming soon.

Bolero #1
Writer:
Wyatt Kennedy
Artist: Luana Vecchio
Letterer:
Brandon Graham
Publisher:
Image Comics
A new series from two bright-eyed and bushy-tailed little scamps!
A woman running away from a broken heart discovers a mother-key into parallel universes. The rules are: The key can work on any door. The mother will only let you visit 53 universes. Do not ask to speak to the mother. Never hop more than 53 times.
Why It’s Cool: We’ll have a full review coming tomorrow, but in brief, this book is an emotionally complex story that sort of starts as slice of life before extrapolating its central themes into really interesting genre territory. Think movies like Palm Springs or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, with more of a Gen Z bend.

Regarding the Matter of Oswald’s Body #3
Writer:
Christopher Cantwell
Artist: Luca Casalanguida
Colorist: Giada Marchisio
Letterer: AndWorld Design
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
After learning that Sonny Germs is the double for the suspected assassin, our crew tails Oswald's police escort to the station... where Oswald is surprisingly shot upon leaving.
Later, the four follow his ambulance and gain access to his body to do the switch.
But after realizing how seamless the process was, they question who Frank works for, and how high up it all goes...
Why It’s Cool: This issue is a white knuckle ensemble thriller set around the Kennedy Assisnation as well as the conspiracy culture that has sprung up around it. I’m not entirely sure where this story is headed in the best possible way, which has me hooked for the full journey.

The Rush #3
Writer:
Si Spurrier
Artist: Nathan Gooden
Colorist: Addison Duke
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Publisher: Vault Comics
CHAPTER 3: THE TRAP
1899: Everyone keeps telling NETTIE BRIDGER that the frozen West is no place for a respectable lady. Lucky for her, she’s neither. She’s seen with her own eyes the impossible devils haunting the forests around BROKEHOOF, but the terror has only hardened her resolve.
She WILL find her missing son, whatever the cost. But avarice and starvation make desperate men deadlier than monsters, and the wealth of this hungry land may prove just as illusory as Nettie’s fading hope.
Why It’s Cool: Through three issues, the intensity with which this story is being really told has really been as engaging as it has been impressive. With a fantastic setting — the brutal gold rush era — and a deceptively simple concept — a mother searches for her missing son — this comic is taking readers so many interesting and surprising places. And the artwork by Nathan Gooden and Addison Duke is just stupendous. There’s an image in this book that will linger with you all week…

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #7
Writer:
Tom King
Artist: Bilquis Evely
Colorist: Matheus Lopes
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics
It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for…the capture of Krem! With the fugitive in custody, Supergirl must now deal with his allies, the ungodly Brigands! To stop them once and for all, she must leave Ruthye behind with the man who killed her beloved father. Can she trust the young girl to let the villain of our story live long enough to stand trial? Or is this the tragic end of his story and ours?
Why It’s Cool: The rest of this series has been long-simmering and measured compared to the explosion in action as the book rushes toward its end. Also, the art just continues to absolutely blow me away, which is no surprise given how good the team of Bilquis Evely and Mat Lopes has been.
