Top Comics to Buy for September 16, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — I try to limit the number of new #1 comics we put on these weekly lists, but this week’s Top Comics to Buy for September 16 is a rare group that has two of them on there. The reason being is twofold. I typically find that #1 comics sell well enough on their own. They get peak publisher promotion. So much so that many of you out there reading this have probably already made up your mind whether you’re going to buy this week’s new #1s. One issue is also difficult for me to recommend, because how do I know whether it’s worth following long term?

Top Comics to Buy for August 12, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — So, as you’ve likely noticed if you follow either this site or my Twitter account, I spent most of last week promoting my first Kickstarter comic, Next Door. Over the years that I’ve formally been involved with the comics industry — primarily as a critic/reporter and a social media personality — I’ve written about too many comics to count. I have not, however, ever had to talk up and promote my own work directly, not until now. And I have to tell you…this way harder than it looks. In fact, I’d say that I came into this past weekend more burnt out on comics than I’ve ever been in my life. But still, I sat down to read my advanced review copies for the week…and the effect of just reading the books was restorative. And now it is my pleasure to share my restorative Top Comics to Buy for August 12 with all of you.

Top Comics to Buy for July 15, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — I feel like I keep saying this, but this Top Comics to Buy for July 15 feels like one of the first of these columns that has a full compliment of industry-wide monthly books to choose from. The distribution stoppage feels increasingly behind us after both Marvel and DC took the week before July 4 off, and now we have a great selection of comics from the Big 2, from indie publishers, and also from book publishers, with Tom Scioli’s excellent Jack Kirby book standing out as the cream of that crop.

Top Comics to Buy for June 24, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — After an onslaught of new books last week, the top comics to buy for June 24, 2020 represents a bit of a return to the post-COVID-19 crisis normal, with a little bit of a scaled back lineup. Among that, however, there are still plenty of gems, including a fantastic DC Comics - Black Label one-shot, the continuation of the best long-form superhero run today, two phenomenal fantasy comics, and more.

Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of June 19, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — The thing about perusing these comiXology sales, is that there’s not really a unified aesthetic week-to-week. Some weeks, we have all indie books and literary-minded graphic novels; other weeks its all capes and tights superheroes. The best comiXology sales for the weekend of June 19 is very much the latter, going hard with superhero stories.

The Best Comics for March 2020

By Zack Quaintance — As I write this, there still isn’t a timeline for when print comics will find their way back into...um….well, I guess, print. Meaning, that the coronavirus crisis in this country has shut down comic book printing, the distributor that ships comics nationwide, and the network of small businesses that sell the books in the community. In other words, enjoy the Best Comics for March 2020, because it’s looking like there won’t be one for April.

Top Comics to Buy for March 25, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — It’s another week of uncertainty, fueled by the rapid outbreak of the coronavirus, the full extent of which is just becoming clear in the United States as much-needed testing slowly trickles out to the populous. That last sentence sounds like the tagline for one of the comics we typically feature here, but it’s not. It’s reality, and it’s hard to deal with, but I continue to find that escaping into comics is as good a means of coping with this as any. So, onward.

Best Single Issues of 2019: House of X, Superman, and The Walking Dead

By Zack Quaintance — One of the things we try to focus on as a website is the review and discussion of monthly comics. That is to say, why much graphic sequential storytelling takes place nowadays in full stories, graphic novels, and complete volumes — we do most of our writing here about the direct market, the pamphlets (as some call them) that come to stores each month to tell ongoing stories. Periodicals, for the older folks.
