Best comiXology Sales: Buy Upgrade Soul for $1, and more

By Zack Quaintance — I was absolutely blown away by one of our best comiXology sales this week, that one being Upgrade Soul, the instant-classic graphic novel by Ezra Claytan Daniels. It’s available online for $1, an absolute steal for one of the best near-future sci-fi stories to come out in recent years within any medium. Past that, the rest of this week’s list is eclectic and varied, which is something I always appreciate, and you can find it in full below…

Enjoy!

Best comiXology Sales: Upgrade Soul and more

Batman (2016 - ) Annual #2
Writer:
Tom King
Artists: Lee Weeks, Michael Lark
Publisher: DC Comics
Travel back in time with us to see the early days of the Bat and the Cat. What was Bruce and Selina's first date? How did this rivalry blossom into romance, and then go right back to being a rivalry again? Tom King reteams with his BATMAN/ELMER FUDD collaborator Lee Weeks to show us a little young love with capes and cowl, and a little crimefighting.
Why It’s Cool: If you enjoyed Tom King’s long run or Batman (or maybe even if you didn’t), you’re probably well aware of this book, arguably one of the highest points of said run. Brought to life with moody Lee Weeks artwork, this is probably the single best bit of storytelling King did with Batman and Catwoman, the relationship at the heart of his run.

$.84

Batman (2016 - ) Annual #2

Hawkeye by Matt Fraction and David Aja, Vol. 1 - Vol. 4
Writer:
Matt Fraction
Artist: David Aja, Javier Pulido, and more
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Clint Barton - aka the self-made hero Hawkeye - fights for justice! With ex-Young Avenger Kate Bishop by his side, he's out to prove himself as one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes! SHIELD recruits Clint to intercept a packet of incriminating evidence - before he becomes the most wanted man in the world.
Why It’s Cool: I recently sat down to watch the first few episodes of the new MCU TV show, Hawkeye, and you know what? It was fine, but it made me (badly) want to re-read these classic comics, probably my favorite books that Marvel has put out in the past decade or so. These comics are so so well-done, elevating the superhero genre and really giving shape to a lot of what was to come from Marvel Comics for years to follow. Getting the full run for like $6 is an absolute steal.
Price:
$.84 - $1.69 each, or $5.91 for all four books

Kaiju Max, Season One - Season Four
Writer:
Zander Cannon
Artist:
Zander Cannon
Publisher:
Oni Press
The longest rampage is the Orange Mile. Follow us down into the bowels of the earth to Kaijumax's Death Row, where all appeals to cosmic justice have been exhausted and the planet's worst killers await their fates. Powerful mob boss Pikadon is defiant as he is finally brought to trial for an infamous cop-killing, but his legendary reputation is on the wane after a long time in hiding. Up on the pound, the remnants of the prison's other gangs adjust to the arrival of a charismatic new inmate Sprinkles the Unidragon whose history (and charges) are shrouded in mystery. Also: Exonerating special effects footage! Giant-sized side hustles! And... ominous onomatopoeia?
Why It’s Cool: It was recently announced that this excellent set of comics would come to an end, but hey, if you haven’t read them yet, you can get the first four seasons (out of six) now at a great price point. Time to catch up and prepare for the finale!
Price: $.99 to $1.99 each; or $6.96 for all four

Upgrade Soul
Writer:
Ezra Claytan Daniels
Artist: Ezra Claytan Daniels
Publisher: Oni Press
For their 45th anniversary, Hank and Molly Nonnar decide to undergo an experimental rejuvenation procedure, but their hopes for youth are dashed when the couple is faced with the results: severely disfigured yet intellectually and physically superior duplicates of themselves. Can the original Hank and Molly coexist in the same world as their clones? In Upgrade Soul, McDuffie Award–winning creator Ezra Claytan Daniels asks probing questions about what shapes our identity—Is it the capability of our minds or the physicality of our bodies? Is a newer, better version of yourself still you? This page-turning graphic novel follows the lives of Hank and Molly as they discover the harsh truth that only one version of themselves is fated to survive.
Why It’s Cool: I just can’t heap enough praise on this book, one of my favorite graphic novels in I don’t know how long. With a story set in the near future, this one is an instant-classic, and the $1 price point this week makes it an absolute must-buy.
