Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of June 25, 2021

Barbalien: Red Planet - From the World of Black Hammer
Writers:
Tate Brombal and Jeff Lemire
Artist: Gabriel Hernandez Walta
Publisher:
Dark Horse Comics
Mark Markz has found his place on Earth as both a decorated police officer and as the beloved superhero, Barbalien. But in the midst of the AIDS crisis, hatred from all sides makes balancing these identities seem impossible-- especially when a Martian enemy from the past hunts him down to take him back, dead or alive. Collects issues #1–#5 of the series.
Why It’s Cool:
Easily one of 2021’s most-deserving Eisner nominees, Barbalien - Red Planet is a moving homage to Martian Manhunter, one that follows Barbalien as he navigates the AIDS crisis as well as an old martian foe hunting him down. This is truly superhero comics at their best.

Legends (1986)
Writers:
John Ostrander and Len Wein
Artist: John Byrne
Publisher:
DC Comics
In the aftermath of the Crisis, experience the first major crossover after CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS with veteran writers John Ostrander (SUICIDE SQUAD) and Len Wein (SWAMP THING), along with superstar artists John Byrne (SUPERMAN) and Karl Kesel (HARLEY QUINN)!
Out of the ashes of the greatest interdimensional holocaust comes a new generation of superheroes: Wonder Woman, the Suicide Squad, the Flash, and the all-new Justice League! But first they must take on a fight to the finish with the deadly minions of Darkseid the Destroyer in order to earn the right to join Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel, and Green Lantern as the mightiest heroes of modern times. This is the story of...Legends!

Why It’s Cool:
Highlighting this series this week because a new Suicide Squad poster dropped, and hey, guess what? This immediate post-Crisis miniseries was actually the first appearance of the Suicide Squad. Aside from that, it’s also a fairly well-done snapshot of DC Comics in that moment.

Midnight Nation
Writer:
J. Michael Straczynski
Artist: Gary Frank
Publisher:
Image Comics / Top Cow
Midnight Nation is a thought-provoking story with religious overtones about a police officer in limbo who goes on a cross-country search for his soul but encounters some mighty obstacles along the way. When it first came out in 2000, J. Michael Straczynski's provocative storytelling and the fantastic art of Gary Frank (Action Comics, Squadron Supreme) captivated readers with its mix of action, horror and drama built around a message of hope, loyalty and sacrifice.
Why It’s Cool:
This is easily the finest comics work of J. Michael Stracznski’s career, and it’s up there with the best books that Gary Frank has worked on. It’s an interesting road trip comic that also involves limbo and other supernatural touches. If you’ve never read this under-the-radar classic, now is the time. Don’t just take my word for it, last year artist Phillip Sevy stopped by the site to talk about why he liked it so much.
