Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of July 9, 2021

By Zack Quaintance — Although this week’s set of comiXology sales for the weekend of July 9, 2021 has fewer sales than it feels like most weeks might otherwise have, the books that are on sale are very solid, especially for fans of Marvel Comics’ adaptations in TV and movies. Have you been digging Loki and are you excited to see/have seen Black Widow? Well friend, do I have some comics for you…and you can find a full list of my picks below.

Enjoy!

Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of July 9, 2021

Black Widow by Waid and Samnee
Writer:
Mark Waid
Artist: Chris Samnee
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Collects Black Widow (2016) #1-12.
A knockdown, drag-out tale of action and espionage! The award-winning creative team supreme of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee takes Natasha Romanoff to new heights — by forcing her out on the lam! The world’s greatest superspy has a lifetime of secrets — and when some of the darkest ones are made public, nobody is safe. As S.H.I.E.L.D. turns on its once-greatest asset, the Widow seeks out her own answers. But will Natasha’s hunt for the Weeping Lion send her back to the one place she never wanted to go? There’s an all-too-familiar room with a dark new name in the Widow’s future. And there awaits the deadly Recluse — who’s fixated on proving her worth by killing Natasha!
Why It’s Cool: There’s a new Black Widow movie, which I imagine will inspire someone somewhere to want to read some Black Widow comics, and you know what? I can’t imagine a better set of books to read than this absolutely dynamite 12-issue run by writer Mark Waid and artist Chris Samnee. The opening issue is particularly excellent, a masterclass in near-silent action-heavy comic book storytelling.
Price:
$5.99

Exiles, Vol. 1 - Vol. 6
Writer:
Judd Winick, with Chuck Austen
Artists: Mike McKone, Jim Calafiore, Jon Holdredge, Skottie Young, and Clayton Henry
Publisher: Marvel Comics
The Exiles consist of heroes pulled from alternate times and universes who are sent to correct problems in the multiverse. Led by Blink from the popular storyline X-Men: Age of Apocalypse, they must set events in each world on their proper course or risk themselves being 'blinked' out of existence.
Why It’s Cool: Let’s keep with our earlier established theme of catering to fans of Marvel Comics adaptations in other mediums that are particularly hot right now. The TV show Loki is giving us some multiversal shenanigans, so why not check out Marvel’s main multiversal shenanigans comic, Exiles, the golden age of which was (in my humble opinion) the first six volumes of the book — mostly penned by Judd Winick — back in the early 2000s.
Price: Ranging from $2.99 to $5.99, or $25.94 for all six volumes

Harleen
Writer:
Stjepan Sejic
Artist: Stjepan Sejic
Publisher: DC Comics - Black Label
It's been months since Dr. Harleen Quinzel began interviewing criminals at Arkham Asylum, and she's having strange dreams about one of them in particular: The Joker. What starts off as nightmares will soon evolve into fantasies. Despite warnings from the Dark Knight himself, she's utterly fascinated by this man who seems the perfect expression of her theory; who says all the things she needs to hear; who seems to know her better than she knows herself. Harleen is a bold new reimagining of the origin of one of DC's most beloved characters, as envisioned by writer/artist Stjepan Sejic. Collects Harleen #1-3.
Why It’s Cool: This book looked and read great when it first hit, and it’s still one of my favorite entires from the Batman-heavy Black Label set of comics being published by DC. It’s a somewhat of a character study in Harley Quinn, one that takes the character more seriously than most other comics featuring her, and the results are fantastic.
Price: $8.99

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.
Writers:
Mike Mignola, John Arcudi, Chris Roberson, and more
Artists: Ben Stenbeck, Brian Churilla, Michael Walsh, Paolo Rivera, Alex Maleev, Shawn Martinbrough, Duncan Fegredo and more
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Gone, but not forgotten! Years after Hellboy's ill-fated tangle with the Beast of Vargu, the Romani women who helped him need that debt repaid. Claimed by a demon in a romance gone wrong, the younger woman reaches out to Hellboy through the power of a familiar old puppet, and a supernatural confrontation full of magic and mayhem ensues! In a second short story, Hellboy goes head to head with a phantom who is looking for an object completely unknown to the living people the ghost is terrorizing. Master of horror Mike Mignola is joined by artist extraordinaire Tiernen Trevallion and award-winning colorist Dave Stewart to bring you the follow-up to smash Hellboy hit ''The Beast of Vargu''!
Why It’s Cool: The main Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. narrative may have wrapped up as of late, but there are still decades of adventures with these characters to be explored…and that’s what these Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. comics set out to do. Some of them tie-in to the main narrative, others stand a bit outside of it, but they all incorporate excellent touches of mythology and character moments, creating rewarding reading experiences in and of themselves.
Prices: Ranging from $5.49 to $11.99 for each volume

The Wrong Earth, plus Dragonfly & Dragonflyman
Writer:
Tom Peyer
Artists: Jamal Igle, Juan Castro, Peter Krause, and Russ Braun
Publisher: AHOY Comics
Collecting the smash-hit miniseries that launched AHOY Comics! On dark, gritty Earth-Omega, masked vigilante Dragonfly punishes evil maniacs and evades corrupt authorities. On sun-splashed Earth-Alpha, costumed crook-catcher Dragonflyman upholds the letter of the law. Now they're trapped on each other's worlds, where even the good guys don't share their values! This volume also collects all the original Stinger and Dragonflyman backup stories, plus extra behind-the-scenes features.
Why It’s Cool: I just absolutely love these comics, which I feel like I’ve described on this site a million times by now. But let’s do it once again anyway: this is a great satirical take on superhero stories, one that sets up two versions of the same character…just from wildly different timelines with wildly different tones. Think Batman ‘66 from the TV show teaming up with Batman from Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns. That’s basically what we’re talking about here, and it’s awesome.
Price:
$8.49 and $9.99, or $18.48 for both
