Best comiXology Sales: Image Comics superheroes

By Zack Quaintance — For this week’s best comiXology sales, the standout is definitely the Image Comics superheroes sale. Within this sale, readers can snag long runs of excellent books like Astro City and Copra. In the interest of variety, though, we also have some picks from Dark Horse Comics’ Berger Books sale, which has very little to do with superheroics at all. So dig in, and check out all of our picks for the week’s best bargains below.

And enjoy!

Astro City, Vol. 1 - Vol. 4
Writer:
Kurt Busiek
Artist: Brent Anderson
Publisher: Image Comics
The original ASTRO CITY collection is offered in a new edition with new cover art by Alex Ross! Welcome to Astro City, a shining city on a hill where super heroes patrol the skies. Each chapter in this collection is a standalone story, highlighting different aspects or characters in the Astro City world. The city's leading super hero tries to be everywhere at once, and berates himself for every wasted second as he longs for just a moment of his own. A smalltime hood learns a hero's secret identity, and tries to figure out how to profit from the knowledge. A beat reporter gets some advice from his editor on his first day on the job. A young woman tries to balance the demands of her family with her own hopes and desires. Despite the fantastic settings, the characters in these slice-of-life stories feel like real people, and that gives the stories real power.
Why It’s Cool: These were formative comics for me, a nice bridge from the world of familiar corporate superhero IP to creator-owned concepts. And they hold up. Yes, you really won’t find a more thoughtful and joyous approach to superheroics than the one Busiek and Anderson deliver in the earliest volumes of Astro City.
Price: From $8.49 - $12.49 each, or $39.96 for all four

Copra, Vol. 1 - Vol. 5
Writer:
Michel Fiffe
Artist: Michel Fiffe
Publisher: Image Comics
They're ugly. They're mean. But up until today, they've always been loyal. So when one of their own betrays them, COPRA has no choice but to turn their nightmarish skills back on everyone who ever even looked at them funny.
Why It’s Cool: On the other side of the superhero sensability specrum from Astro City is Copra, the work of cartoonist Michel Fiffe. This book is an almost-abstract take on a certain era of superhero comic books — think the John Ostrander Suicide Squad — that definitely takes the tone of that book and makes it something all its own, formed as it is by Fiffe’s bold artwork. You can get the first five volumes on sale now, which nets you my personal favorite set of Copra stories, volume 3.
Price: From $7.99 to $9.99, or $42.95 for all five volumes
Buy Them Here: Copra Vol. 1; Copra Vol. 2; Copra Vol. 3; Copra Vol. 4; and Copra Vol. 5

Incognegro and Incognegro: Renaissance
Writer:
Mat Johnson
Artist: Warren Pleece
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics - Berger Books
In the early 20th Century, when lynchings were commonplace throughout the American South, a few courageous reporters from the North risked their lives to expose these atrocities. They were African-American men who, due to their light skin color, could "pass" among the white folks. They called this dangerous assignment going "incognegro."
Zane Pinchback, a reporter for the New York-based New Holland Herald, is sent to investigate the arrest of his own brother, charged with the brutal murder of a white woman in Mississippi. With a lynch mob already swarming, Zane must stay "incognegro" long enough to uncover the truth behind the murder in order to save his brother -- and himself. Suspenseful, unsettling and relevant, Incognegro is a tense graphic novel of shifting identities, forbidden passions, and secrets that run far deeper than skin color.

Why It’s Cool:
And now for something completely different…like everything the Berger Books imprint at Dark Horse Comics puts out, this book is one of the smartest comics stories in recent memory. It’s a period piece, set in the early 20th Century, and it tackles issues of race and identity within a pair of compelling noir mysteries.
Price: $5.99 each, or $11.98 for both volumes

She Could Fly, Vol. 1 - Vol. 2
Writer:
Christopher Cantwell
Artist: Martin Morazzo
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics - Berger Books
An unknown woman flying at fantastic speeds and spectacular heights suddenly explodes mid-air. No one knows who she was, how she flew, or why. Luna Brewster, a disturbed 15-year-old girl, becomes obsessed with learning everything about her while rumors and conspiracy theories roil. Will cracking the secrets of the Flying Woman lead to the liberation of her troubled mind? By Christopher Cantwell (co-creator/showrunner of AMC's Halt and Catch Fire) and artist Martín Morazzo (Ice Cream Man) with color by Miroslav Mrva. Collects the four issue critically acclaimed series in a deluxe softcover edition. ''She Could Fly is a modern-day masterpiece... It's heartbreakingly beautiful and honest to its core.'' – Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) ''Full of unexpected pleasures . . . masterful, joyful, poignant . . . A must- read'' – G. Willow Wilson (Ms. Marvel, Air)
Why It’s Cool: I absolutely love this comic, which combines ideas around corporate espionage, fantasy, and dark psychological struggles into a really compelling, coherent narrative. I’ve recommend these two volumes in the past, but I’m doing it again now because She Could Fly: Fight or Flight is slated to come out on December 14, giving this story a finale.
Price: $5.99 each, or $11.98 for both volumes
Buy Them Here: She Could Fly, and She Could Fly, Vol 2: Lost Pilot

Superior Spider-Man, Vol. 1 - Vol. 2
Writers:
Dan Slott and Christos N. Gage
Artists: Giuseppe Camuncoli, Humberto Ramos, and more
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Doctor Octopus claims the ultimate victory over Spider-Man! After years of defeats at the wall-crawler's hands, Otto Octavius achieves the unthinkable - putting his mind in the body of Peter Parker! As one Amazing era ends, a new one begins for a smarter, stronger, Superior Spider-Man! And he'll prove it, by donning an upgraded costume - and taking on the all-new Sinister Six! But things aren't so friendly in this Spidey's neighborhood - and his more ruthless approach to crimefighting is cause for concern for his "fellow" heroes. Will his violent actions mean Spider-Man is an Avenger no more? Featuring classic foes including the Vulture and the Green Goblin, and new friends such as Anna Maria Marconi, this is Spider-Man like you've never seen him before - but whatever happened to the real Peter?
Why It’s Cool: The Superior Spider-Man storyline is without question one of the major highlights of in-continuity Spider-Man comics over the past 12 years or so. If you haven’t read this storyline in the past, pick it up now, especially as it becomes somewhat relevant to what’s happening currently in the main Amazing Spider-Man title.
Price: $8.99 each, or $17.98 for both
