Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of February 5, 2021

By Zack Quaintance — Last week was one of those glorious weeks where the best comiXology sales list was really varied and eclectic. This week not so much; it’s mostly superheroes. And look — this happens. It’s often an effect of the bigger publishers — namely Marvel and DC running sales with much more frequency than the smaller entities in the space. That said! We still have some excellent picks for you to enjoy…

Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of February 5, 2021

The American Way
Writer:
John Ridley
Artists: Georges Jeanty
Inker: Danny Miki
Publisher: DC Comics - Vertigo
In 1962 Jason Fisher was given astonishing powers by the United States government—powers he used to defend the nation as the New American. He and his teammates in the Civil Defense Corps were real-life superheroes.
Except that it was all a fraud. A conspiracy. And now, 10 years after the CDC was torn apart by racism, infighting and murder, the Corps’ surviving members find themselves pulled in very different directions. Missy Devereaux—a.k.a. Ole Miss—is transitioning from the First Lady of Mississippi into a candidate for governor and defender of a vanishing and hateful way of life. Amber Eaton—formerly known as Amber Waves—has become a domestic terrorist, using her powers to infiltrate and destroy the country’s centers of power.
Somewhere in the middle stands Jason Fisher, who has remained a crime-fighter even as evidence mounts that he is accomplishing nothing besides propping up a system that’s rigged against him as a black man in America.
In a nation being torn apart, what does it mean to fight for the American way?
Why It’s Cool: We’re really digging the Ridley-penned The Next Batman, which is coming out right now, and so it’s fitting that his earlier most prominent work for DC Comics would be part of the publisher’s Black History Month sale. Check it out now if you haven’t already!
Price: $5.94

The Black Hammer Universe
Writer:
Jeff Lemire
Artist: Dean Ornston and various
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
HEROES NEVER DIE...THEY JUST GET RETCONNED! Once they were heroes, but the age of heroes has long since passed. Banished from existence by a multiversal crisis, the old champions of Spiral City...Abraham Slam, Golden Gail, Colonel Weird, Madame Dragonfly, and Barbalien...now lead simple lives in a timeless farming town. Even as they try to find their way home, trouble has a unique way of finding heroes wherever they are! From the prodigious brain of Jeff Lemire (Animal MAgan, Sweet Tooth)! Amazingly realized by Dean Ormston (Lucifer, 2000 AD) and Dave Stewart (Hellboy)! Extra-long first issue...26 story pages!
Why It’s Cool: Jeff Lemire’s Black Hammer Universe has been a refreshing and understated superhero homage that sort of deconstructs the genre in very 2020s way, doing so by taking off the shine in a way that feels human rather than gritty or exaggerated. Now, you can get the three biggest Black Hammer collections to date on-sale at great prices.
Price: $12.49 each, or $37.47 for all three

Daredevil by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson
Creators:
Frank Miller and Klaus Janson
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Daredevil got a new lease on life in a landmark 1979-1983 run by writer-penciler Frank Miller and inker-penciler Klaus Janson, whose daring reinvention of the character quickly made Miller one of the biggest and most influential stars in the comic-book industry. Miller put his own stamp on established cast members such as reporter Ben Urich, femme fatale Black Widow, mad assassin Bullseye, the saw-fisted Gladiator, and monstrous crime boss Kingpin. Miller also introduced Daredevil's mysterious mentor Stick, deadly ninja foes the Hand, and Matt's long-lost love Elektra, a beautiful assassin who would become one of Marvel's most memorable characters.
Why It’s Cool: This run is one of the fundamental superhero comics of all time, a tone-setter for all the superhero work that came after it, including the many critically-lauded Daredevil runs with the character that continue to follow to this day. You can get all three volumes on sale this weekend, and finally catch up with these classic characters.
Price: $6.79 each; or $20.37

Naomi: Season One
Writer:
Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker
Artist: Jamal Campbell
Publisher: Marvel Comics
DC's biggest, newest mystery starts here! When a fight between Superman and Mongul crashes into a small Northwestern town, Naomi begins to uncover the last time a super-powered person visited her home-and how that might tie into her own origins and adoption. Follow Naomi's journey on a quest that will take her to the heart of the DC Universe and unfold a universe of ideas and stories that have never been seen before. Join writers Brian Michael Bendis and David Walker and breakout artist Jamal Campbell in Wonder Comics' massively ambitious new series and star...Naomi. Collects NAOMI issues #1-6.
Why It’s Cool: Naomi is one of the most exciting characters introduced by DC Comics in years, and this excellent miniseries is a great origin and primer for her. It’s also really well executed, with Campbell in particular doing a star turn here with the work (one that has continued on to his current gig drawing Far Sector).
Price: $5.94

The Old Guard, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2
Writer:
Greg Rucka
Artist: Leandro Fernandez
Publisher: Image Comics
Eisner-winning writer GREG RUCKA (LAZARUS, BLACK MAGICK, Wonder Woman) and critically acclaimed artist LEANDRO FERNÁNDEZ (THE DISCIPLINE, Deadpool, Punisher: MAX) team up together to introduce THE OLD GUARD, the story of old soldiers who never die...and yet cannot seem to fade away. Trapped in an immortality without explanation, Andromache of Scythia—"Andy"—and her comrades ply their trade for those who can find—and afford—their services. But in the 21st century, immortality is a hard secret to keep, and when you live long enough, you learn that there are many fates worse than death.
Why It’s Cool: This is a simple concept — immortal soldiers — that Rucka and Fernandez execute with fantastic storytelling chops and attention to detail. It’s also the subject of a recent Netflix adaptation that was relatively critically-acclaimed. These are comics you can grab for cheap this weekend and blow through, having a great time as you do.
Price: $12.13 for both
