Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of October 30

By Zack Quaintance — Halloween is tomorrow, and, as such, the choices on our list of best comiXology sales for the weekend lean spooky, very spooky. There’s a nice variety of horror comics on this weekend’s list, ranging from really abstract to superhero-heavy to whatever box you want to try to put Coffin Bound into. The one thing that ties all these books together, however, is that they are all wholly excellent.

Check it out!

Collects GIDEON FALLS #1-6
Why It’s Cool: This is one of the best-crafted series in all of comics, although a bit decompressed to be reading on a monthly basis, especially the way the narrative has been constructed to constantly recontextualize all that has come before it. However, with the final volume wrapping up now, there has never been a better time to catch up on this great book, the majority which is on sale over this very spooky weekend.
Price:
$3.59 for Vol. 1; $6.29 each for Vol. 2 - Vol. 4; or $22.46 for all of four

Batman: Creature of the Night
Writer:
Kurt Busiek
Artist: John Paul Leon
Publisher: DC Comics
Bruce Wainwright, a comic book-reading kid obssessed with the Caped Crusader, loses his parents in a violent crime...and in the real world, no superheroes exist to save the day. BATMAN: CREATURE OF THE NIGHT, written by Kurt Busiek (ASTRO CITY) and drawn by John Paul Leon (MOTHER PANIC) is a stand-alone story set outside of regular continuity in 1968 Boston, MA. The victim of the brutal murder of his family, young Bruce sees grief and rage build inside himself...until something strange starts taking wing in the Gotham night! Something similar to the comics he's been reading his whole life. As life begins to imitate art, will Bruce Wainwright be able to live up to his fictional namesake?
Why It’s Cool: A spiritual and thematic successor to writer Kurk Busiek’s collaboration with Stuart Immonen, Superman Secret Identity, this book follows Bruce Wainwright, who essentially lives in our world (one in which Batman is a fictional DC Comics character) as his life slowly morphs into Batman. This is a great pick for Halloween weekend, but Busiek and Paul Leon’s book really plumbs some horror genre depths, incorporating psychotics and mind monsters with its gritty visuals. This is a must-read book, both for fans of Batman as well as for fans of the horror aspects inherent to the character.

Coffin Bound Vol. 1: Happy Ashes
Writer
Dan Watters
Artist: DaNi
Colorist: Brad Simpson
Letterer: Aditya Bidikar
Publisher: Image Comics
Izzy Tyburn has promised the world that if it won’t have her in it, it’ll have nothing of her at all. Chased by an unstoppable killer, she’s retreading her life, leaving nothing behind but burned rubber, ash, and the sun-scorched bones of those who get in her way. Ride shotgun on an existential road trip through the tangle of a blood-splattered life.
Why It’s Cool: Few comics are as surreal, poetic, and outright strange as Coffin Bound, a tour de force in ideas and accompanying imagery by an incredible creative team. There are so many indelible ideas in this first volume, from thoughts on nihilism and death to a literal strip club, in which the dancers take off their skin. It’s great stuff, and a must-read creator-owned comic.

Killadelphia Vol. 1: Sins of the Father
Writer:
Rodney Barnes
Artist: Jason Shawn Alexander
Colorist: Luis NCT
Letterer: Marshall Dillon
Publisher: Image Comics
Featuring the show-stopping talents of SPAWN series artist JASON SHAWN ALEXANDER and the writer behind such hit shows as Wu-Tang: An American Saga, Marvel’s Runaways, and STARZ’s American Gods—RODNEY BARNES. When small-town beat cop Jimmy Sangster returns to his Philadelphia roots to bury his murdered father, he stumbles into a mystery that will lead him down a path of horrors and shake his beliefs to their core. The city that was once the symbol of liberty and freedom has fallen prey to corruption, poverty, unemployment, brutality…and vampires.
Why It’s Cool: There are a good number of vampire comics these days, but one of those that stands out the most is Killadelphia. This comic — which is incredibly well done — has to do with corruption, poverty, brutality, and racism…all of which are accented by the presence of vampires. Over this scary weekend, the imagery alone in this book would make for a good (and very scary) read.

$3.59

Morbius Vol. 1
Writer:
Vita Ayala
Artist: Marcelo Ferreira
Inker: Roberto Poggi
Colorist: Dono Sanchez-Almara
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Morbius is the Living Vampire…but is he more? For years, Nobel Prize-winning biologist Dr. Michael Morbius has been struggling to find a cure for his unique case of vampirism. Now, for the first time in longer than he can remember, his salvation may be tantalizingly within reach! But the path to regaining his humanity is littered with dangers — and worse! In a leap of faith and desperation, Morbius takes matters into his own hands — but the results are monstrous, and now his lust for blood threatens to overwhelm him like never before! Old-school Marvel villain the Melter has resurfaced at just the wrong time — and he just might become the first in a long line of victims in the reinvigorated vampire's bloody path! Michael Morbius only wanted his soul back, but how much will it cost?
Why It’s Cool: Morbius has always been one of Marvel’s most interesting spooky villains — a scientist turned to a vampire who is determined to use his knowledge to cure himself of the ailment. In this recent mini series, he gets a fitting solo story from a very talented and up-and-coming creative team, and it’s a great read for superhero fans looking to get into some horror comics this Halloween weekend.
