By Zack Quaintance — I knew it would happen sooner or later, but here we are — this week’s Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of December 11, 2020 is all Big 2 comics. Worry not, however, there are some really really good stories on the list this week, from one of the DC Universe’s most underrated moments in time (heh) to three of my favorite Marvel comics of the past five years.

Check it out!

Final Crisis: Revelations
Writer:
Greg Rucka
Artist: Philip Tan
Publisher: DC Comics
As a massive cosmic battle between good and evil rages across the DC Universe, a war of faith tests the might of the Spectre and the souls of humanity! Darkseid, the malevolent New God has waged a brainwashing war against mankind, leaving the Spectre - God's embodiment of vengeance - to face off against the mad god's followers. Worshipping a religion based on crime, these disciples plan on subduing humanity and extinguishing its free will. It's up to the Spectre, the Question and Batwoman to take down these minions before all hope is lost! Featuring stunning art from DC newcomer Philip Tan (BATMAN AND ROBIN, GREEN LANTERN).
Why It’s Cool: I threw this one on the list this week immediately because it was one of the books that Taylor Pecther touched upon in his recent piece about Renee Montoya, The Question. Final Crisis can be complex, but it’s ideas are amazing and series like this showcase the strong storytelling that took place within its framework.
Price: $5.99

The Immortal Hulk, Vol. 1 - Vol. 7
Writer:
Al Ewing
Artist: Joe Bennett
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Is he man or monster...or is he both? You know Bruce Banner. He's quiet, calm, never complains. He's a scientist who believes he can use the darkest elements of his personality to do good in the world. If someone were to shoot him in the head...all he'd do is die. But the horror lives deeper. And the horror refuses to die. When night falls, something other than the man gets up again. The horror is the Immortal Hulk! And though he cannot die, the Hulk is being hunted yet again. By the government, by Alpha Flight, by the mysterious Shadow Base - and by the Avengers! But Bruce has even bigger problems. Something terrible has infected him. Something with unspeakable plans for humanity. And the only one who knows about this dark infection...is the Immortal Hulk!
Why It’s Cool: If you haven’t heard us gush about how amazing Immortal Hulk is by now, I don’t know what to tell you. This book rules — it’s a superhero comic that doesn’t fell like one in the best possible way — and not to spoil any surprises but it’s going to do well yet again on our Best Of lists, which are coming soon.
Price: $2.99 each; or $20.93 for all seven volumes

Invaders (2019), Vol. 1 - Vol. 2
Writer:
Chip Zdarsky
Artists: Butch Guice and Carlos Magno
Publisher: Marvel Comics
The greatest generation of Marvel heroes is back — to stop one of their own! Namor the Sub-Mariner, monarch of Atlantis, has once again declared war on the surface world — and this time he means to win at any cost! But he won’t find allies in Captain America, the Human Torch and the Winter Soldier. All three fought by Namor’s side in World War II as the Invaders, but now they stand as enemies! Namor’s deadly plans are as far-reaching as the ocean, and it’s up to the Invaders to stop him — but what chance do they have against a former ally who knows all their wartime strategies and fighting tactics? Namor’s secret history is revealed, the Torch is transformed — and the world is forever changed. But can Namor possibly be redeemed?
Why It’s Cool: This two-volume maxi-series features an intriguing mystery spread across two timelines - the present and the WWII era Invaders history. It’s also rendered expertly by a pair of fantastic artists, with Carlos Magno’s massive action sequences (many underwater!) standing out as a highlight.
Price: $3.99 each or $7.98 total

Vision, Vol. 1 - Vol. 2
Writer:
Tom King
Artist: Gabriel Hernandez Walta
Publisher: Marvel Comics
The Vision wants to be human, and what's more human than family? So he heads back to the beginning, to the laboratory where Ultron created him and molded him into a weapon. The place where he first rebelled against his given destiny, and imagined he could be more — that he could be a man. There, he builds them. A wife, Virginia. Two teenage twins, Viv and Vin. They look like him. They have his powers. They share his grandest ambition (or is that obsession?): the unrelenting need to be ordinary. Behold the Visions! They're the family next door, and they have the power to kill us all. What could possibly go wrong? Artificial hearts will be broken, bodies will not stay buried, the truth will not remain hidden, and the Vision will never be the same.
Why It’s Cool: All these comics later, and this is still Tom King’s best work, bar none. Can’t recommend it enough if you haven’t checked it out already.
Price: $3.99 each or $7.98 total

Zero Hour: Crisis In Time
Writer/Artist:
Dan Jurgen
Inker: Jerry Ordway
Publisher: DC Comics
Written and pencilled by Dan Jurgens (CONVERGENCE, THE NEW 52: FUTURES END) and inked by Jerry Ordway (THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN), ZERO HOUR chronicles the discovery by DC's greatest heroes of a tidal wave of temporal disruption, as they band togheter to combat chronal chaos. When all of his family and friends were killed by the attack of a super-villain, the once heroic Green Lantern went insane and became the immensely powerful Parallax. Hoping to save his loved ones, the mad Hal Jordan decided to recreate the universe by unraveling time. Now as realities and time lines converge, dinosaurs walk the Earth again, deceased heroes are resurrected, and half the population has suddenly vanished. With Parallax on the verge of success, Superman, Batman, Robin, Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and the rest of the world's heroes must find a way to stop their former comrade or cease to be as all existence ends.
Why It’s Cool: DC Comics has had so many crises. Like, so many, but few have been as bonkers and as fun and as indicative of what the universe is all about at its best as Zero Hour: Crisis In Time, which for my money is one of the most underrated stories in the major DC stories ranks.
Price: $5.99
