INTERVIEW: Writer David 'DB' Andry talks RESONANT #10, the series finale

By Zack Quaintance — Today, writer David ‘DB’ Andry stops by to talk to us about the upcoming finale for his Vault Comics series, Resonant (Resonant #10 is out this Wednesday, June 16), as well as to tease some very interesting future projects that are on the way. I’ll let the interview below do most of the talking here, but I do want to note that this second arc has taken what was already a strong comic and leveled it up.

Resonant is about Waves that cause people to act on their worst impulses, and the new set of issues has doubled down on how and why that effects the characters within the family at this book’s center. It’s really strong stuff, and the finale is fantastic.

Anyway! Check out my full chat about the book with the writer below!

INTERVIEW: David ‘DB’ Andry talks Resonant #10

ZACK QUAINTANCE: So first things first here, I have absolutely loved the addition of artist Skylar Patridge to this book’s creative team. Her work has taken what was an already strong comic to an entirely next level. How was it integrating Skylar onto the team?

DAVID ‘DB’ ANDRY: Skylar was my only choice when we were searching for an artist for the second arc. I knew she would be perfect for the look and the tone of the book. Skylar is such a pro and so easy to work with. We had some great, lengthy conversations before she started, not just to talk about Resonant, but to get a feel for how each other worked. Once the work started, there was really nothing for me to do. Skylar's layouts were perfect each time, her covers were amazing and the interiors speak for themselves. She really got into a great rhythm and leveled up with each issue. Before Resonant even finished, I was hitting Skylar up for another project, I can't wait to work with her again!

ZACK: Did the story or anything individually change at all with you now writing for a new artist?

DB: The scripts were pretty much all finished by the time Skylar came on board, but I wanted her to come on as a true co-creator so she had freedom to change panels, layouts, scenes, whatever. I trust the artists that I work with to know what is going to work visually on the page better than me. For Skylar, this really shines through in the fight scenes and the...intimate moments. She really made these much more real and visceral than my scripts had them. Knowing how amazing Skylar is at this type of scene, my next scripts with her will just say "and they fight" and I'll step back and watch her work her magic.

ZACK: One choice I’ve really enjoyed in this second arc is the true nature of what’s happening with the community Paxton has discovered. Was that the plan from the start or the book, and what inspired the ideas behind the truth there?

DB: Some of the things at the Spiral were there from the beginning, but, without spoiling anything, the 'special nature' of the Spiral was really inspired by conversations with Adrian Wassel, Vault's Editor in Chief. He really pushed me to think about the mechanics of the Waves and when I started to explore their nature more, ideas about how they could be resisted or even controlled started bubbling up. That led to some of the clues to the nature of the Waves we hinted about in arc 1 on Honcho's island with Miki and Paxton. I'm hoping that people re-read Resonant a bunch of times and can discover new things each time.

ZACK: So, I don’t know if I missed an announcement...but is this the end of Resonant? It certainly finds a nice resting place emotionally in this issue…

DB: This was the planned end of Resonant. Although, I wouldn't mind returning to this world to tell more stories of Paxton, Bec, Ty, Stef, Maw or especially Fern. Who knows what the future holds...

David ‘DB’ Andry.

ZACK: Finally, reading the tea leaves (which by that I mean Twitter), it looks like you have a lot of creative projects in the works soon. Can we ask for one — just one! — fun teaser about one of the projects you’re working on?

DB: Personally, I think the book with Tim Daniel and Emily Pearson for which there have been character designs) looks really interesting...Emily has been absolutely DESTROYING the character designs for that specific project. We're keeping that one a little close to the vest for now, but Tim and I will have a book out later this year from Vault Comics. Tim and I have been co-writing for just over a year now and this is the first project we started on. It's very personal for both of us, something that we both brought a ton of deep seated fears and beliefs to. It's fantasy, but I've been calling it a 'low' fantasy. Like, take normal fantasy and drag it through the mud. This will just be the first of many, many Andry/Daniel collaborations in the future!
