Top Comics to Buy for October 27, 2021

By Zack Quaintance — This Top Comics to Buy for October 27, 2021 is a strong one, with some fantastic issues from some of our favorite ongoing indie comics, including That Texas Blood and Made In Korea. On top of that, Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men run concluding event, Inferno, has its second part out, and the excellent Something Is Killing the Children universe expands, just a bit, doing so with the launch of House of Slaughter.

So yes folks, enjoy this week’s books. With looming paper shortages set to disrupt the industry, the year might be getting weird from here…but enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for October 27, 2021

House of Slaughter #1
Story By:
James Tynion IV & Tate Brombal
Script By: Tate Brombal
Artist: Chris Sheehan
Colorist: Miquel Muerto
Letterer: Andworld Design
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Discover the inner workings of the House of Slaughter in this new horror series exploring the secret history of the Order that forged Erica Slaughter into the monster hunter she is today.
You know Aaron Slaughter as Erica's handler and rival. But before he donned the black mask, Aaron was a teenager training within the House of Slaughter.
Surviving within the school is tough enough, but it gets even more complicated when Aaron falls for a mysterious boy destined to be his competition.
Dive deeper into the world of Something is Killing the Children in this first story arc by co-creator James Tynion IV (The Department of Truth, The Nice House on the Lake) and co-writer Tate Brombal (Barbalien), with art by rising star Chris Shehan (The Autumnal) and co-creator Werther Dell'Edera (Razorblades).
Why It’s Cool: You love to see a high-quality original comic see so much success that it’s able to spin off into a larger universe, and that’s exactly what’s happening this week as the excellent Something Is Killing the Children gives rise to the new book, House of Slaughter, and if this first issue is any indication, it’s going to be a great series.

$3.99

Inferno #2
Writer:
Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Stefano Caselli
Colorist: David Curiel
Letterer:
Joe Sabino
Publisher: Marvel Comics
FEEL THE FIRE!
Secrets. Lies. They have a way of coming out and biting you when you least expect them. The secrets and lies of Krakoa will shake it to it foundation. Head of X Jonathan Hickman, continues a tale of consequences with one of his first Marvel collaborators, artist Stefano Caselli!
Why It’s Cool: I’m a huge fan of Jonathan Hickman’s ambitious, sci-fi storytelling, and I really enjoyed Inferno #1, the first comic that felt directly intended to get us back to the ideas Hickman and his collaborators laid out in House of X/Powers of X. I’m on board for this entire four-part series, Hickman’s last writing for Marvel’s mutants.
Price:
$5.99

Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters #7
Writers:
Chris Samnee and Laura Samnee
Artist: Chris Samnee
Colorist: Matthew Wilson
Letterer: Crank!
Publisher: Oni Press
The search to find their missing father has led Rainbow and Jonna through monster-infested wastes, desert lands, dank caves, and now, a hidden city. They have experienced the best and worst of humanity in their short time in the bustling, if ramshackle, metropolis. It's safe to say that they've both had enough, so Rainbow ventures deep into the monster fighting pits to rescue her sister as only she can! One thing leads to another, and it's dueling rescues in this incredible tour-de-force issue.
Why It’s Cool: From its very start, this series has brimmed with kinetic visual storytelling and imagination. Now into its second volume, the story is also delving into character in a really interesting way that layers narrative depth into what was already an interesting and must-read book.

$3.99

Made in Korea #5
Writer:
Jeremy Holt
Artist: George Schall
Letterer: Adam Wollet
Publisher: Image Comics

Why It’s Cool: The penultimate issue of Made In Korea has arrived, and like the rest of this book, it’s a must-read. Simply put, this is one of the smartest monthly comics of the year, filled with heartrending ideas, narrative twists, and near-future sci-fi dystopian plot elements that cohere perfectly, making for a great commentary on our times.

$3.99

That Texas Blood #11
Writer:
Chris Condon
Artist: Jacob Phillips
Publisher: Image Comics
"EVERSAUL, 1981," Part Five
A freak thunderstorm descends on West Texas as Joe Bob and Eversaul confront the Cult of Night.
Why It’s Cool: Long-time readers of this site will know that I absolutely love That Texas Blood (if you haven’t read writer Chris Condon on the significance of setting within this comic, please do that now). This second arc has been just as good as the first, if not better, with each issue building expertly on the last. This issue is no exception, and easily one of the highlights of the week. This is the penultimate issue of the second arc, and it builds so well toward the finale, which is headed our way next month.
