Top Comics to Buy for February 3, 2021

By Zack Quaintance — There’s a little bit of a slow feeling to the start of this year, maybe owing to the industry still feeling the impact of the distribution stoppage last year, but all that said, we still have a very strong bunch of books for today’s Top Comics to Buy for February 3, 2021. We’ve got a big fantasy finale, more Future State, another gem from AHOY Comics, and more. Enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for February 3, 2021

Canto II: The Hollow Men #5
Writer:
David M. Booher
Artist: Drew Zucker
Colorist: Vittorio Astone
Letterer: Andworld Design
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Price: $3.99
Canto’s epic second adventure concludes! Canto has entered the Valley of the Lionhearted and learned he can only lift the Shrouded Man’s curse by sacrificing his own clock. In doing so, he could gain the power to finally defeat the Shrouded Man and free everyone in the Unnamed World. Will Canto give up his own time to become the hero his people believe him to be?
Why It’s Cool: Canto II - The Hollow Men is the finale for the second season of what has rapidly become one of the best true fantasy stories in all of comics. This story is relentlessly well-executed with a giant empathetic core, and this week’s finale is up on par with the rest of this excellent book.

Far Sector #10
Writer:
N.K. Jemisin
Artist: Jamal Campbell
Letterer: Deron Bennett
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $3.99
The groundbreaking sci-fi series approaches its thrilling climax!
Since arriving at the City Enduring, Sojourner “Jo” Mullein has confronted an insidious conspiracy of murder and mayhem, but even this most resilient Green Lantern reaches her breaking point when she uncovers an “emotional sweatshop” producing black-market feelings for a world without them. But Jo is only too human…
Why It’s Cool: Now just three issues away from its finale, Far Sector continues to be as complex of a sci-fi story as to ever grace superhero comics, written as it is by N.K. Jemisin, whose Broken Earth Trilogy won an unprecedented three consecutive Hugo Awards. Jemisin’s immersive ideas here are rendered to intricate perfection by rising star artist Jamal Campbell. I’ve loved this series, and this is one of the most exciting issues of it yet.

Future State: Superman of Metropolis #2
Writers:
Sean Lewis, with Brandon Easton
Artists: John Timms, with Valentine de Landro and Cully Hammer
Colorists: Gabe Eltaeb, with Marissa Louise and Laura Martin
Letterers: Dave Sharpe, with AndWorld Design
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $5.99
Braincells, the advanced offshoot of the diabolical Brainiac, continues to lure Jonathan Kent down the wrong path-but things go from bad to this can’t get any worse when it appears it has also taken some manner of control over Supergirl! If the Kryptonians clash, nothing will be able to protect the bottled city of Metropolis!
Meanwhile, inside the bottle itself, the Guardian is doing everything he can to stop the city from destroying itself from within, while Mister Miracle has discovered the trail of a strange signal that he doesn’t realize will take him to Warworld.
Why It’s Cool: This second half of the Future State - Superman of Metropolis story brings the entire idea behind this Jon Kent-starring book into sharper focus, and it’s a really fantastic story. In fact, the Superman Family of comics is shaping up to be one of the strongest parts of Future State, and I’m personally loving it.

Luna #1
Writer/Artist:
Maria Llovet
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Price: $3.99
For fans of Faithless and Die comes a new dark thriller from acclaimed writer & artist Maria Llovet about a young woman named Teresa, who's plagued by prophetic dreams that connect her to something powerful, something... divine. When Teresa fatefully crosses paths with the Family of the Sun, she believes them to be exactly what anyone else in the late '60s would expect -- a hippie cult whose leader claims to have met the divine. But secret blood rituals, powerful drugs and sex runneth amok will bring Teresa face-to-face with the truth about the Family, herself and the dark secret behind her dreams. Immortality, magic and alchemy, and the true power of enduring love collide in this new series for Mature Readers.
Why It’s Cool: Maria Llovet is a fantastic writer/artist who is making some of the most interesting erotica-themed comics in the entire monthly direct market. This book continues to build on Llovet’s momentum from recent titles like Faithless and Hearbeat, also bringing something new with a setting in the 1960s that makes full and wonderful use of that era, from the fashion to the sensibilities. This is a very good new #1 comic

The Wrong Earth: Night and Day #2
Writer:
Tom Peyer
Artist: Jamal Igle
Inker: Juan Castro
Colorist: Andy Troy
Letterer: Rob Steen
Publisher: AHOY Comics
Price: $3.99
As environmental crises bring gritty Dragonfly and campy Dragonflyman face-to-face on a third Wrong Earth, a twist of fate makes them inseparable, a situation neither crimefighter wants! Extra: Illustrated prose fiction and features.
Why It’s Cool: I love the superhero satire comics that AHOY puts out, and this one is the original. This is a book built on the concept that a campy take on a superhero switches earths with the gritty take on the same hero. Now in the second season of this book, the characters are being thrown together, and it’s hilarious. Writer Tom Peyer continues to script these books in a way that sends up superheroes without ever feeling gimmicky or condescending about it. This is a smart and deeply funny comic that anyone who appreciates the absurdities of superheroes should be reading.
