Top Comics to Buy for December 8, 2021

By Zack Quaintance — For the Top Comics to Buy for December 8, 2021, we’ve got a book I’ve been looking for since the creators first started teasing it on Twitter — One-Star Squadron #1. This comic — which highlights DC Comics deep (very deep!) bench of characters — is a collaboration between monthly comics best satirist, Mark Russell, and monthly comics cleverest artist, Steve Lieber. It’s great stuff, but more on that below, along with our full list of choices…

Enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for December 8, 2021

PICK OF THE WEEK
One-Star Squadron #1
Writer:
Mark Russell
Artist: Steve Lieber
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Letterer: Dave Sharpe
Publisher: DC Comics
Who you gonna call? One-Star Squadron! Meet DC's superhero team where heroism meets capitalism. This ragtag group of heroes led by Red Tornado is here to provide service with a smile. All you must do is send a request via their on-demand hero app and they'll answer any call. Whether it's a children's birthday party or an alien invasion, no job is too small or too big!
Brought to you by Eisner nominee Mark Russell (The Flintstones, Wonder Twins, Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles) and Eisner winner Steve Lieber (Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen), you'll want to invest early in this one-of-a-kind miniseries that promises a story filled with heart, heroism, and humor.
Why It’s Cool: Again, this book features just such a great creative team with Mark Russell and Steve Lieber, who to my knowledge have never worked together before. What we get here is such a great mash-up of their shared wit combined with separate sensibilities and a playful (yet heartfelt!) approach to DC Comics deep bench of characters. There are still five issues left, and I’m already dreading the end of this one.

$3.99

Devil’s Reign #1
Writer:
Chip Zdarsky
Artist: Marco Checchetto
Colorist: Marcio Menyz
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Marvel Comics
The story that's been building for years is here! Wilson Fisk went from Kingpin to Mayor of the biggest city in America and is going to bring his full criminal and political power to bear on the super heroes who call NYC home. The man who once destroyed Daredevil has set his sights on The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and more. And since it's Fisk, once he takes them all down, you know he's going to sign it.
CROSSBONES! TASKMASTER! TYPHOID MARY! SHOCKER! WHIPLASH! RHINO! KRAVEN! Fisk has an ARMY of super villains at his command - and this is just his opening salvo. For years, Fisk has waited for his time to strike, and YOU WON'T BELIEVE the aces he's got up his sleeves!
Why It’s Cool: The beginning of the end of Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s excellent Daredevil run is here, and with this six-part finale series, the lens seems to be expanding from intensely personal to giant and grandiose, reaching deeper into the Marvel Universe to take us home.

Inferno #3
Writer:
Jonathan Hickman
Artist: R.B. Silva
Colorist: David Curiel
Letterer:
Joe Sabino
Publisher: Marvel Comics
NIMROD STRIKES!
Krakoa's troubles don't attack one at a time. Jonathan Hickman reunites with his POWERS OF X collaborator R.B. Silva for the penultimate chapter of his X-Swan Song.
Why It’s Cool: Remember how amazing and exciting House of X/Powers of X felt when it first hit all the way back in 2019 (which, let’s face it, now feels like exponential lifetimes ago)? Well, writer Jonathan Hickman has been recapturing that feeling in this finale for his work on the X-Men comics, and now with just one issue left to go, he’s re-teaming with one of the artists on that book, R.B. Silva.

Lunar Room #1
Writer:
Danny Lore
Artist: Gio Sposito
Colorist: DJ Chavis
Letterer: AndWorld Design
Publisher: Vault Comics
Cynthia "Sin" Breaker used to be a lot of things. A werewolf. A mob enforcer for a powerful mage. A name feared on every street of Solar City. But now she's forcibly retired from all those things, trying to get over her past job and past loves.
Zac Zero is a mage with their own agenda, and right now, item #1 is to hire some protection. Normally, Sin wouldn't look twice, but Zero may have the key to getting back the most important thing she ever lost: herself.
Why It’s Cool: The last time that writer Danny Lore teamed up with one of indie comics’ best publishers, Vault, the result was Queen of Bad Dreams, a severely underrated book with a concept I still think about a lot to this very day. All of this is to say that the last collaboration being so successful has me pumped for this new one, Lunar Room #1, which has a concept that is just as intriguing. Can’t wait for this one.

Why It’s Cool: You’re going to hear a lot more about this series when our Best of 2021 content starts coming out, but I’ve loved this very smart comic from its beginning. It’s ending here this week, and I’m kind of just like, well if you know you know. But if you don’t know, put this one on the list to grab in trade when they compile it. It’s a very good comic around themes of tech, school violence, cultural assimilation, adoption, IP propriety, and much more. It’s just so smart.
