It’s a relatively sparse week with a few key titles to really sustain us, kind of like a fine dining experience where your food looks little but tastes amazing and when you leave, you leave satisfied. That’s the best I can do, lay off me, I’m tired.

With that said, on to the books!

Top Comics to Buy for March 4, 2020

Why It’s Cool: Mark Russell and Steve Pugh’s last collaboration — The Flintstones — was fantastic, allowing the duo to explore and satirize many aspects of modern life through the lens of a well-known if dormant-as-late intellectual property. Their new project is wholly original and timely as all get out, and it sees the duo exploring one of the most searing problems facing the world today — that a small group of individuals control an increasingly large segment of the world’s wealth and are doing little to help the rest of us overcome our civilization’s (and our planet’s) many problems. It’s also funny and well-done. Simply put, you should be sure to pick this book up.

Why It’s Cool: Daredevil, as usual, is one of the best series at Marvel Comics right now. This should come as little surprise, given that this franchise has a long history of bringing the best out of creators (see Frank Miller, Ann Nocenti, Brian Bendis, Ed Brubaker, and the list goes on). This run is no exception, with Zdarsky taking a micro view of the character to start (the premise is that in a moment of weakness Daredevil makes a big mistake) that continues to blossom outward, rendering consequences for not just Matt and his world but for Hell’s Kitchen and the rest of New York City. Marvel has also done an excellent job pairing artists with Zdarsky on this run, be it the noir excellence of Jorge Fornes or the main series artist that returns in this issue, Marco Checchetto.

Why It’s Cool: While there are perhaps getting to be too many of these giant DC Comics anniversary celebrations (it’s essentially monthly this year), there has yet to be a bad one, and The Flash #750 is no exception. There’s a good mix of new and old in this book, which makes a point to include all three of the heroes who have been The Flash, even the rare (and what seems begrudging given DC’s usual approach) story centered around Wally West. There’s a bit of weirdness with this comic, given that it involves some of DC Comics in-flux plans for the future, alluding as it does to a new crisis and time realignment that may not come now given the recent departure of Dan DiDio, but this is still a fun read nonetheless.

Why It’s Cool: Since this book started, Money Shot has been one of our favorite comics, and it remains so to this day. This book has been both fun and thoughtful from its start, exploring interesting questions about sex, sensationalism, and scientific/technological advancement. It’s also really grown into a great character-driven book as well, using its ensemble cast expertly at times to drive the plot forward, doing so by depicting the relationships between the scientists on the team in a way that feels compelling and real. This book is also from Vault Comics, and it shows — this is a publisher that puts out disparate and fearless books, willing to take chances while trusting readers to be just as smart and savvy as its content. Truly, we are lucky to have comics like this one.

Why It’s Cool: We’ve been hyped for this book for some time, and now it’s finally here. We’ll have a full review later this week, but for now all we can say is that Tom King certainly brings a unique set of interests and experiences to his comics — and it is perhaps on fuller display here than it has been in any of his other recent superhero explorations. Pairing that with the art team of Mitch Gerads and Evan “Doc” Shaner makes for an unflinching book that while it might not be to everyone’s liking, it’s definitely a comic that is not to be missed, if only for the debates and discussions that will spark from it.
