SWORD OF AZRAEL miniseries due in August from Batman: Urban Legends team

By Zack Quaintance — DC Comics is launching a new Sword of Azrael miniseries this August from writer Dan Watters and artist Nikola Čižmešija, the very same creative team that told a 30-page story featuring the character in the pages of the Batman: Urban Legends anthology, the publisher has announced.

The first issue will arrive on August 2, and, along with it, DC will compile the creators’ earlier Azrael story in a new one-shot available the same day with the title, Sword of Azrael: Dark Knight of the Soul. The story originally appeared serialized in Batman: Urban Legends #8 - #10. Rounding out the creative team on the new series will be colorist Marissa Louise and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.

You can find the full canned description of the new series via DC Comics after the jump…

Before we get to that, though, it should perhaps also be noted that Watters has been working with the Azrael character outside of that story, as well, featuring him as he did in the (very good) limited series, Arkham City: Order of the World (which is on our list of Best DC Comics of 2022 … so far). A collaboration with artist Dani, that book is a must-read, and if it’s any indication, this series is one to look forward to…enjoy the official description below, after the first issue’s cover!

The warrior angel of St. Dumas returns! Jean-Paul Valley does not want to be Azrael ever again. All it has brought him is pain, violence, and misery. He has sequestered himself away at a monastery in Europe to find peace. But when a young woman who claims to have the same System programming that made Jean-Paul into Azrael arrives at the monastery, he won't have a choice but to don his violent mantle of Azrael once more to protect her from the deadly assassins who wish her harm.

Finally, before we go we would be remiss if we didn’t also point out that the original Batman: Sword of Azrael series from the 1990s is on our list of the Best Batman Comics of All-Time.
